Sony hacked again - 93,000 accounts compromised with brute-force attack

Sony has warned users against a massive bruteforce attack against PlayStation and Sony network accounts. The attack – which used password and user ID combinations from an unidentified third-party source – succeeded in compromising 60,000 PlayStation Network and 33,000 Sony Online Entertainment network accounts. These accounts have been locked and passwords reset.

The attack took place between October 7 and 10 and succeeded in matching valid sign-in IDs. According to a blog post by Philip Reitinger, Sony's Chief Information Security Officer, credit card details were not compromised.

Both the motive for the latest attack against Sony network users and the identity of the perpetrator(s) remains unclear. Sony shut down its PlayStation Network in April in the aftermath of a far more damaging hack attack. The service wasn't restored until a month later. Personal information on 77 million account-holders was exposed as a result of the April PlayStation hack. Details including names, addresses, passwords and purchase histories was exposed by the megahack.

Sony PlayStation 3 price drops in India - now starts from Rs. 16,990

Many of our readers were delighted with the news that Sony announced price cuts for the PlayStation 3, all across the world, and were quite eager to find out the revised prices in India. Sony India hasn’t taken too long to comply, with new slashed prices hitting Indian shores a day after Japan got its new prices.

Interestingly, Sony has dropped the PS3’s prices by more than the equivalent $50 drop it had announced earlier, making the news even more palatable. The new prices are as follows:

• 160GB PS3 – Rs. 16,990 (translating to a Rs. 3,000 price cut)
• 320GB PS3 (with the Move Starter Pack) – Rs. 19,990 (translating to a Rs. 2,500 price cut)

Unfortunately, there is no accompanying price drop in PS3 game titles. However, this makes the new variants and bundles of the PlayStation 3 a very attractive offering in India, when compared to the Xbox 360 bundles on offer. Microsoft, which recently dropped prices, might just have to reconsider its strategy in India.

We also expect the new low-cost PlayStation Portable, the PSP E-1000, to be making its way to Indian shores soon, after its release in Europe later this year.

Sony Announces PlayStation 3 Price cuts across the world

Trying to add fresh life to the now-crawling adoption of its aging gaming console, Sony has announced its plans to reduce the recommended price of the PlayStation 3 by roughly $50 and equivalent amounts, across the world.

The news comes in the wake of a series of disruptions and security breaches of the Sony PlayStation Network, events that the company evidently believes would have scared off potential new customers.Sony recently also introduced freebies for PSN subscribers, after it brought the service back online.

Sony has quoted new MSRPs for Japan, Europe, and the U.S., seen in the below table. It looks like this time however, Europe has not received the sharp end of the conversion stick as is usual – with a 50 euro drop probably sufficient to make European customers stand up and take notice.

New prices will be effective immediately in the Europe and the U.S. Japan prices, which got a 5000 yen cut, are effective from Thursday. Not surprisingly, reduced prices will roll out more gradually across the world.
